Salaama - the feminine face of Islam
Dedicated and courageous believers in Islam provide insight into a theology that is offering equal rights for women and men.
With her book "Believing Woman in Islam – Unreading Patriarchal Interpretations of the Qur´an" Dr. Asma Barlas has laid the foundation for a reading of the Qur´an in which men and woman are equals. Based on the Qur´an she argues that men and woman are equals before God and that they were created as such. Not until later patriarchal beliefs were interpreted into the holy text.
In the summer of 2008 Dr. Asma Barlas taught at the University of Amsterdam as she was holding the Spinoza Chair. Andrea Lötscher met her for an interview and filmed her lecture on "Believing Women in Islam Between Secular and Religious Politics and Theology". The lecture can be ordered through movies.
